Spirituality and Music

Music has been the love of my life since I can remember. It started with the piano, then clarinet, flute (Western and Indian), tabla...and throughout an exploration of the voice. For me, vocals are the most intimate bridge between my heart and everything divine and true that I experience.

Much of my life has been a balance between my spiritual practice and my music practice. How much time do I give to my spiritual practice vs how much time do I give to my music -- it has often been a bit of a struggle to figure out.

I can never forget this moment many years ago when one of my meditation teachers in new york city saw some pages of music notation coming out of my bag after his meditation class. We were in an elevator leaving the building where he held class. I had made it to class just in time that day after coming from a music lesson. I didn't say a word to him about my life, but, he looked into my eyes and said "your meditation practice will help your music."

And, it has...so much. So much so that I don't even think of them as separate practices anymore. I know my spiritual practice cleanses and opens my heart to such truth and purity that it floods into my music. And, what do I want to share with the world through music but ultimate truth and the journey - beautiful and difficult as it is -- to get there...

So as I take a little break from my travels and tours, I share this meditation blog with you. May spirituality break your heart open as it does mine...leaving a ripe field for creative expression.
